The Regent will be the first independent living residence in Wichita to offer residents a storm shelter constructed to FEMA 361 standards.
Legend Senior Living President and Chief Executive Tim Buchanan said prospective residents are asking for shelters built to tough government standards. “After seeing what happened in Greensburg, I think every Kansan is more aware of the need for access to a strong, protective shelter,” said Buchanan.
FEMA 361 guidelines detail design and construction standards for community shelters that provide tested protection during tornado and hurricane events. Buchanan said that meeting the guidelines roughly doubled the projected cost of the shelter.
“Most home complexes offer what’s called an area of refuge. The storm shelter constructed to FEMA 361 standards raises the bar,” he said. “It’s stronger, better, and I think our residents are going to feel good knowing it’s a part of where they live.”
