Resident Spotlight - Helen Barnes

Helen Barnes was born in Ceder Point, KS in 1924. She joined the Navy and went through Basic Training in New York City. Helen had many interesting jobs. One in particular was a magician's assistant on a variety show on T.V. She remembers having to wear purple lipstick because it was the only color that would show up on black and white television! In 1961, Helen decided to transfer to McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, where she met her husband, Melvin. Melvin retired as Chief Master Sergeant after 22 years of service. Helen has two sons, a stepdaughter, many grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Helen enjoys crocheting, playing the piano, sewing doll clothes, and has an amazing talent for making flower arrangements.
